Without a FIDE Elo yet, B.02 8.2 uses a different rule: it averages the ratings of your rated opponents plus 2 fictitious opponents rated 1800 (each counted as a draw), then adds a performance adjustment for your actual result. A first, published rating needs at least 5 games against rated opponents — in one tournament or pooled across several within 26 months — and is capped at 2200.
Example: five games against rated opponents in one tournament, average opponent rating (including the two fictitious 1800s) Ra ≈ 1746, scoring 57% of the available points (including the two fictitious draws) → a first rating of 1796.
This example runs through the same calculation function as the real calculator — the numbers above are computed, not typed by hand.
A tournament performance rating (Rp) can also be compared to the minimum performance FIDE requires for a title norm (Handbook B.01 1.4.8) — as a distance, never a confirmation. Example: a performance of 2550 is 50 points below the nearest threshold, GM (2600).
This comparison only shows the distance between the tournament performance and the minimum performance per title (FIDE Handbook B.01 1.4.8). It does NOT check the full norm requirements (federation mix, share of titled opponents, time control, minimum average opponent rating, minimum number of games per norm) and does not confirm a norm.
Is this the official FIDE rating list?
No. This is an unofficial forecast calculated from a chess-results.com tournament link, following the FIDE Rating Regulations (B.02). The official standard rating list is published monthly by FIDE at ratings.fide.com and is always authoritative — small differences can occur, for example from corrected results or other tournaments played in the same rating period.
I don't have a FIDE rating yet — can I still use this?
Yes. If you have no FIDE Elo, the calculator switches to the initial-rating rule (B.02 8.2) automatically, once you have played at least 5 games against rated opponents in a single tournament import.
What does 'norm proximity' mean?
It compares your tournament performance rating (Rp) to the minimum performance required for a title norm (FIDE Handbook B.01 1.4.8) — nothing more. It does NOT check the other norm conditions (federation mix, titled-player quota, time control, minimum number of games) and never confirms a norm.
