Tournament performance and special rating
When an opponent is rated with their tournament performance instead of their DWZ (WO 3.6): performance rating, the 300-point rule, the exception for two-player matches.
Tournament performance rating Rh (WO 3.6.1, 3.6.2)
For established players with at least 5 rated games, a performance rating Rh is formed independently of R0: the number at which the points scored would exactly match expectation.
It is found by iteration (Appendix 1.1) using the opponents' fixed R0 or R1 ratings. At 100%, a hypothetical draw against the average opponent is added; at 0% there is no performance rating. Players without an existing rating do not receive an Rh.
The tournament performance ("performance" in the calculator) is a figure for this one tournament, not a new DWZ.
Exception players: the 300-point rule (WO 3.6.3)
If a player's tournament performance is more than 300 points above their existing DWZ, they are rated with that performance instead of R0 when calculating their established opponents' DWZ.
Example: an opponent rated 1500 plays a tournament performing at 1900 level. For your calculation, they then count as 1900 — a loss against them costs less, a win earns more.
- Applies only to the opponents of the exception player; their own DWZ is still calculated normally from R0.
- Does not apply to two-player matches (tournaments with exactly two participants).
In the calculator you'll see this marked as "special rating" on the game, showing both numbers: the DWZ and the performance rating used.
Why the forecast can change until the tournament ends
An opponent's tournament performance is only final after their last round. During the tournament, an opponent can still cross the 300-point threshold or fall back under it — which retroactively changes which number counts for you.
Frequently asked questions
Do I get more points myself as an exception player?
No. The special rating only affects how your opponents are calculated (WO 3.6.3). Your own DWZ still follows the normal formula from R0.
From how many games is there a tournament performance rating?
From 5 rated games (WO 3.6.1) — and only for players who already have a DWZ.
